It’s May now!
New this week, we’ve got the first of the butternut squash. It’s prolific this spring, and jumbo. This is a great end-of-the-season crop because it will last the whole summer on your counter if you’re not ready to cook it yet!
Now, in our final month of the harvest season, we are soaking up this cornucopia of fresh food while it is still here. At home, we’ve started freezing small packs of blanched greens, and lightly cooked vegetables (in bags) for the summertime. In the weeks ahead, we’ll be thinking about stockpiling longer-keeping items in the veggie drawer like carrots and beets. Tips for keeping veggies for the summertime.
Good news for all of us – the early spring weather was mild and dry, allowing our final plantings to establish well and grow strong. Everything, now, looks and tastes vibrant. We expect continued abundance up to the very end of May! Think – greens, peppers, tomatoes, squashes, beans, onions, beets, carrots, basil and MORE! This season will not “taper off” at the end – we’ll be harvesting tons of just about everything and driving it down to St. Pete for 3 more weeks after today.
Don’t even get us started on flowers – it’s a profusion! And next weekend is Mother’s Day. As always, we’ve got flowers for everyone and their mom.
All the best,
Ellen and Cole
