We’re in the second half of May now! We made it through our big flower harvest last week for Mother’s Day. We hope we made lots of mommas happy this past weekend!
Updates:
Now, we turn our attention to the final two weeks of harvest (only TWO farmers markets left!) and clearing the fields. We have already turned under about half of the farm. What remains, we will harvest for these final two bountiful markets.
After that, we will plant our cover crop seeds over the whole farm, which will cover the farm in a blanket of green for the summertime off-season.
We are working on summer projects already – we have been cataloguing and reorganizing a lot of our supplies. We are also finishing up a monumental project we’ve been chipping away at for 2 months now – a deer fence around the property. 10 year ago, when we started the farm, we fenced the whole property with four-foot tall field fencing. That fencing has been quite effective at keeping out wild hogs which can damage vegetable fields. However, we have struggled for 8 of our 10 seasons with pressure from deer that come onto the farm and chomp away at the back-end of the rows. Sometimes they have destroyed an entire crop. So we have been working to raise the fence from four feet to eight feet tall (deer can jump really high). It is half a mile of fencing and hasn’t been a small feat, but today we are putting the finishing touches on the project. We look forward to starting next season with less stress related to crop-loss.
Announcement:
This week, our Farm Membership program opens enrollment for the 2023-2024 season! We have been mentioning this for a few weeks now, and want to make sure that everyone has gotten a chance to check out the program before enrollment opens.
Early-bird enrollment opens Thursday, May 18th. Early-bird enrollment only lasts for two weeks (ending on June 1st), and is the best time to enroll as a Farm Member to get the best deal.
So now is a great time to read about what being a member means, consider how it might improve your life, and decide whether or not to make the jump!
Read about membership and decide if it’s right for you!
That’s all for now,
Ellen and Cole
