Fleeting Spring

Springtime is here,

We’ve pulled out all the frost cloth and hoops from the field, having passed March 14th, our local frost-free date.

All the oak trees have pushed out new green leaves, carolina wrens and chickadees are making nests on the farm and our front porch. The mornings are cool and the days are warm. The plants in the field are growing with accelerating vigor as the days lengthen. Soon, sunflowers, squash, cucumbers, basil, zinnias and all the warm-weather things will return in utmost plenty.

Thanks to all who visit us at the market, and keep us very busy. Those who have nudged us regarding not receiving emails – yes, you’re still on our email list! We just haven’t been sending any ! We’ll be doing our best to stay more in touch this way.

We’re back this weekend at the Saturday Morning Market, with crops galore and very good ones. The celery is big and crunchy, we will have the most amazing sweet onions we’ve ever grown, a profusion of ranunculus and snapdragons, and tomatoes and peppers and greens of all kinds to boot. This is a really great time of year to be eating local. Everything is extra vibrant, ripe, delicious. Crossing into spring after winter – it’s a fleeting moment, everything is perfect.

Here, right now we’re harvesting an absolute riot of spring flowers. This is the last week for the ranunculus!! We’d like to encourage you to fill your home with flowers and share flowers with a friend this week if you’re feeling inspired – so they’re priced to share! 6 bunches for $38 🙂

The spring equinox is here in the week ahead! It’s worth celebrating. Fill your house with flowers and delicious flavors, take a friend a bouquet, plant something if you can. These are some of the best weeks of the year.

See you at the market!

Ellen and Cole

P.S. It’s green garlic season! Only through the end of March.
