Cukes, zukes, garlic

Last week we reported the first arrival of springtime crops like cucumbers and squash – and this week we can report that bountiful harvests of those items are here! We expect to harvest over half a ton of cucumbers and squash this week! Veggie box folks – you’ll be getting cucumbers and squash in your box this week, no doubt. Market shoppers – make sure to pick some up. The first cucumbers and squash of springtime are some of the best we have available all year.

With some rain earlier this week, and some cooler weather coming starting tomorrow, we have turned off the water on our garlic crop to prepare the plants for drying and curing. With that said, this week is likely the last week to get ‘green garlic’ (immature, easy-to-prep garlic with its green tops). If you missed out on the garlic in the veggie box last week, it is available as an add-on this week in the online store. If you missed out at the market (we sold out of garlic early), we are bringing a ton of it to market this week, so stop by to get yours.

With only 9 more harvest weeks left of the season, we are essentially done planting by now. Now, we turn our attention to harvesting, taking final crop notes for the year, and beginning to line up special projects to complete before the start of the following season. One project we dove into last week was evaluating some new carrots we trialed this year. We are always trying out new (and old) varieties of crops to find the options with the best flavor, beauty, and growth. So this year, we are evaluating a few new rainbow carrots to potentially add to our custom rainbow carrot mix. We think we found some winners!

Sincerely,
Ellen and Cole
